If you have had completed treatment for periodontal disease with our dentists in Durham, North Carolina, at Willowdaile Cosmetic and Family, please read and follow these procedures. Each will help make you more comfortable and prevent possible complications.

Care of Your Mouth: Rinse your mouth two to three times per day with warm saltwater. (Mix one teaspoon salt with eight ounces of water.) Start home care (brushing and flossing) immediately. In the beginning, you may have to be gentle. Drink plenty of water.

Discomfort: Your gums may become achy, but over-the-counter pain medications will help minimize discomfort. Sensitivity to cold may temporarily occur. Remove plaque from the tooth by brushing and flossing. Placing a dab of fluoride toothpaste on the touchy tooth will stop cold or touch sensitivity in a few days. Take 600 mg ibuprofen every six hours for the first few days if needed.

Eating: Your next meal should be soft. Avoid any hard, crunchy foods like potato chips, popcorn, etc. for the next three to four days.

Smoking: Please do not smoke following a scaling and root planning procedure. Tobacco smoke is an irritant that interferes with healing. Refrain from smoking for 24 hours or longer.

The success of your gum treatment depends on improving oral hygiene and your commitment to routine professional care. If any problems arise, please call Willowdaile Cosmetic and Family at 919-479-5800 or talk with Dr. Simran Kaur and Dr. Matthew Garcia.
